Aleph Melbourne
Aleph Melbourne is a social/support group for Jews in Melbourne who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, same-sex attracted, questioning their sexuality, somewhere in-between or just supportive of GLBT Jews. The group operates in a confidential and friendly environment and is independent of but sensitive to any religious observance. Aleph Melbourne celebrates Jewish culture and tradition in an open-minded and inclusive manner. Members and their friends and partners are encouraged to attend events and functions with this aim in mind. Since 1995 Aleph Melbourne has held a variety of activites including Shabbat dinners, Jewish festival celebrations, group meetings, participated in the Gay & Lesbian Pride March, manned a stall at the "Concert in the Park" Jewish Community carnivals, held movie and theatre nights and dinner outings. We hold very successful dinners each year to coincide with major Jewish festivals. For the first time Aleph Melbourne attended Chanukah in the Park in 2002, with a very good turnout of members, some of whom hadn't celebrated Chanukah previously. Beginning 2003 Aleph Melbourne holds very successful Shabbat dinners for Pesach and Rosh Hashanah at the Leo Baeck Centre in Kew. 2005 saw 10 years since Aleph Melbourne was founded. In that January we held a very successful celebration at The Outlook in South Yarra to mark this occasion. Members of Aleph Melbourne, along with members of other gay and lesbian multicultural groups came along on the night. Special guest Deputy Lord Mayor of Melbourne Gary Singer also attended the celebration. Aleph Melbourne is currently offering a support and referral service as well a discussion forum and information service. Annual activities include a Purim and Chanukah picnic, a Queen's Birthday Shavuot afternoon tea, our annual Pesach and Rosh HaShana Shabbat dinners and a variety of other events. In addition, Aleph Melbourne attends Jewish & Israeli sessions at the annual Melbourne Queer Film Festival. Please contact us for details.
